The SEN Teacher Job

An "outstanding" (OfSTED) SEN Primary School which I assist with recruitment in the London Borough of Lambeth, is seeking a SEN Teacher for a full-time post starting in September on a one-year contract.

The incoming SEN teacher would be taking over from a permanent member of staff who is taking maternity leave. You will be teaching a class of 5 KS2 pupils with a range complex learning and health needs.

The SEN teacher post would begin with a one-year contract with the opportunity of going permanent for the following September subject to performance.

The School

The school is particularly renowned for its inspirational leadership which has meant it has been able to maintain high levels of achievement and progress for over 10 years. The school scored outstanding in all departments in its most recent OfSTED report (2019) and provides support for Severe Learning Difficulties, Autism and Profound and Multiple Difficulties (PMLD) pupils, which include pupils who have sensory or physical, medical, behavioural, emotional and social needs.

The school is funded for 78 pupils although this can change depending on rates of influx. The overriding educational needs of each pupil are centred on their cognition or learning with pupils working between P1-P8 and exceptionally within level 1 of the National Curriculum. Class sizes are no more than 7 pupils with 3-5 TAs on hand at all times and outstanding facilities available in the school.

PSHE, physical development and communication have a high profile within the curriculum and a total communication approach is adopted within the school - AAC strategies such as Makaton, PECS, Object Cues, On Body Signing are all used. Every opportunity for teaching and learning is explored and maximised within the school, for instance the SCERTS framework and the TEACCH approach for children with ASD is used.

The Ideal SEN Teacher

The ideal SEN Teacher candidate will have previous experience dealing with SLD and PMLD children with MSI experience desired. However, applications are invited from all enthusiastic professionals who have passion and can deal with a challenging but ultimately rewarding environment.

Someone who has previously put together a finely tuned curriculum for Primary pupils may have a significant advantage. You will be an SEN Teacher able to creatively plan and deliver the curriculum to pupils with SLD/PMLD catering for individual needs where necessary. You will maintain appropriate and accurate assessment and monitoring of pupils progress and be able to lead a team of teaching assistants in the classroom.

Benefits

  • Excellent classroom facilities with well-resourced specialist equipment
  • Excellent Continuous Professional Development
  • Fantastic opportunities for career advancement
  • School with Hydrotherapy pool
  • Excellent TAs
  • School with ongoing and continued remodelling, enlargement and refurbishment
