Job description

SEMH Teaching Assistant - Newham

Specialising in Severe Behaviour Needs | Primary & Secondary Pupils

Are you confident supporting pupils who need more than a traditional classroom approach? Do you have the resilience, training, and emotional intelligence to work with children and young people with severe social, emotional, and behavioural needs?

Remedy Education is working with a forward-thinking SEMH school in Newham that supports primary and secondary-aged pupils with high levels of need. These students have often faced trauma, exclusion, or unmet emotional needs - and they need adults who can meet them with consistency, boundaries, and empathy.

We're looking for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to join the team in September 2025. This role is ideal for someone with Team Teach training and a strong understanding of positive behaviour support strategies.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Providing calm, consistent support for pupils with severe and challenging behaviours
  • Using Team Teach and de-escalation techniques to manage and reduce incidents
  • Building trusting, respectful relationships with pupils who may struggle with authority or emotional regulation
  • Supporting learning in class and during unstructured times, using a trauma-informed approach
  • Working closely with SENCOs, teachers, and behaviour leads to follow individual behaviour plans

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience working in an SEMH, PRU, or specialist SEN provision
  • Confidence supporting pupils with extreme behaviours, emotional dysregulation, or past trauma
  • A no-nonsense, calm and compassionate attitude - someone who doesn't take things personally
  • Team Teach certification (or willingness to be trained)
  • Experience implementing or supporting Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) or similar strategies
  • A valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply through us)

What the School Offers:

  • A structured, well-supported environment with clear behaviour systems
  • Ongoing training in Team Teach, trauma-informed practice, and behaviour management
  • A tight-knit, collaborative staff team who have each other's backs
  • Opportunities for progression and professional development
  • Leadership that understands the challenges of SEMH and prioritises staff wellbeing

If you're looking for a school where consistency, compassion, and high expectations are the norm - this is the role for you.

To apply, send your CV to Remedy Education or call us on 0203 904 5478 for more information.

Interviews are being scheduled now ahead of September - early applications are strongly encouraged.
