Job description

Psychology Graduate Lambeth, South West London - Education and Training - ASAP start, Long term - Psychology Graduate Kent

This LSA role is focused on graduates who are aspiring outreach workers and have sincere objectives within Mental Health and Special Educational Needs, with a holistic outlook and approach.

If you have sincere objectives within Mental Health, Youth advocacy and Special Educational Needs, this Graduate LSA role for the rest of this academic year, is one where you will need to build your foundations in empathy, resilience and positive engagement. It is about challenging and understanding the anti-social behaviour that can be displayed, understanding the traumas and context of the students you are working with.

This LSA role in an Alternative provision for boys aged 19-25 that have excluded from their mainstream education. There will be a plethora of reasons why each boy is in the school, they will have suffered different traumas and all different contexts. It's a case of forming relationships with the boys, over time. There are no quick fixes here, if you have a Utopian idea of being able to 'save' every student, you will not succeed. You may help plant ideas that you will not see the full, positive effects or end results from, know that they are there and will happen.

Understanding the dichotomies and contradictions that are at play in this role is challenging, that is the point of the role. You need to see safeguarding at work, how to keep these children safe, even when they may not want to be helped or trust you, initially. Some of the good work you do, you may never see.

Sincerity is vital in this Graduate LSA role in Lambeth, you must know why you want to work with the boys. If you have had previous personal, family experience or support work experience as a graduate, this will give you a solid foundation.

Many of the students will be incredibly charismatic, your days will fly by quickly and you will not know where the day has gone. At the same token, in an environment where a lot of the student's Mental Health is incredibly vulnerable, you will have to be very patience and focus on the student's skills for life.
