Job description

Key Responsibilities

  • To conduct housing advice interviews with local private sector residents focussing on preventing homelessness and giving good quality advice on the potential avenues to resolve problems and on housing choices available so that customers can make informed decisions about their options
  • To advise on all matters relating to landlord and tenant disputes and to negotiate with landlords to prevent homelessness and provide practical assistance to help customers remain in their accommodation or move to alternative accommodation thereby preventing homelessness
  • To provide good quality advice, information and assistance through face to face interviews, home visits, by telephone and LBTH JD and PS Template May 2021 by correspondence within a casework based customer care framework, ensuring all deadlines are met and appropriate referrals are made to other agencies to properly progress the case.
  • To provide the above through a detailed knowledge of housing legislation and case law including landlord obligations and a good knowledge of welfare benefits and rights
  • To liaise with other agencies to gather all relevant information about each case.
  • To investigate claims of harassment and illegal eviction liaising with the police and other agencies, conducting interviews under PACE and taking statements for the determination of the appropriateness of prosecution
  • To advocate for customers including court representation in possession proceedings and injunction applications
  • To promote the Councils PRS and rent deposit scheme and to actively assist customers in seeking and securing accommodation in the private sector
  • To develop and share a comprehensive network of contacts across the public, private and voluntary sectors to improve partnership working.
  • To ensure that all contact with customers and other organisations is fully recorded and where possible confirm advice given in writing
  • To record data and statistical information accurately and on time To respond to queries from customers or their approved advocates and from landlords - whether in person, by telephone, email or in writing in line with the councils standards
  • Actively contribute to the council's priorities and outcomes in a way that promotes a 'one organisation' approach.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and communities to ensure the council and the directorate strategic priorities are effectively implemented. LBTH JD and PS Template May 2021.
  • To make recommendations to the Team Manager for use of the Homelessness Prevention Fund, Rent Deposit or other related direct financial assistance where such would prevent homelessness.
  • Promote equality among all staff and ensure that services are delivered in a non-discriminatory way, that is inclusive of all disadvantaged groups.
  • Support organisational change and learning, following and implementing appropriate systems of self-development, communication and engagement, quality measures, monitoring and review in delivering the functions of the role.
  • Promote sustainability, including encouraging a culture

What you need:

  • QSW Status - including qualification, Social Work England registration and completed ASYE
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience
  • Right to work in the UK
