Job description

The role will largely focus on internal communications to communicate new ways of working to employees and ensure council staff are informed, engaged and aware of the council's new dispersed way of working and how staff can play a part in the organisations' development and future shape of the council. The role will lead on the development, implementation and delivery of internal communication tools including newsletters for staff and managers, updating content on the intranet, to work closely with key change services including HR to develop and deliver internal communications activity to support major organisational change.

There will also be a focus on providing specific communications support for a specific service within the council which will focus on developing campaigns, social media and digital content addressing key council priorities.

Job purpose:

Internal communications

  • To lead the development, implementation and delivery of internal communication tools including a fortnightly newsletter for managers and a newsletter for a service area within the council.
  • Updating content on the Intranet, and other staff briefings both written and verbal i.e. the Chief Executive's roadshows, and digital noticeboards.
  • Following the pandemic, to develop and deliver a communications strategy to ensure that all staff are engaged and aware of the council's new dispersed ways of working and how staff can play a part in the organisation's development and future shape of the Council.
  • To work closely with key change services including Human Resources to develop and deliver internal communications activity to support successful major organisational change, so colleagues fully understand the reasons for change, and have the opportunity to inform the process by contributing their views and ideas on its implementation in order to meet their work objectives.
  • To work closely with HR to provide ongoing updates to staff about changes to work guidelines and practice following Covid-19.
  • To promote the use of internal communications tools that effectively engage and inform all staff (regardless of working environment) on the priorities and work of the Council, using and promoting good practice including brand, style and Plain English guidelines.
  • To work collaboratively with the Digital Communications Manager and Communications officers on the use of internal communications and provide support and advice as required.
  • To lead, research and write copy for a range of internal communication channels to agreed timescales.
  • To support the organisation of staff briefing events, including managers/staff conferences and Leadership Group events.
  • To work with Human Resources colleagues to promote and communicate staff/manager support initiatives such as training opportunities and the leadership and development programme.
