Principal Planning Officer

Looking to speak with experienced Planning Officers to work for a local authority with a valuable and varied historic environment consisting of 41 conservation areas and thousands of statutorily and locally listed buildings which is experiencing sustained growth in housing and employment.

The Council has adopted ambitious planning policies to ensure that all its residents, workers, students and all other communities benefit from this growth whilst protecting and enhancing Islington's unique character. A well-resourced Development Management Service is needed to support the Council in achieving its priorities to deliver high quality developments that deliver the affordable homes needed in a sustainable and proactive manner that enhances the borough as a place to live, work, study and visit. Looking to maintain high quality service delivery by recruiting a number of additional Principal Planners to the Major Applications Team.

An important function of the role will be supporting the Councils Housing New Build Team to help to maximise the delivery of affordable housing on Council own land.

You will have knowledge of Development Management planning and a full understanding of the processes in delivering the statutory planning service in a local planning authority. Extensive relevant experience of dealing with major applications preferably in inner London authorities is required.

You should also be fully up to date with fast-changing London and national planning policy, development management practices, guidance and legislation. You must be able to work creatively and constructively with the management team, applicants, the local community and other stakeholders to ensure that the council's planning priorities are delivered.

The key functions of the roles are managing caseloads associated with a Major Planning Applications, including making recommendations, and representing the Council at Informal Hearings and Public Inquiries. The roles include policy development and interpretation, negotiating high quality outcomes and supporting the decision-making processes of the Planning Authority.
