Job description

Makaton Trained Teaching Assistant

Supporting a young boy in year 1 with down syndrome

South East London, Lewisham

September 2021

Remedy Education are pleased to be working with a primary school in South East London. They are recruiting a confident teaching assistant who is confident in Makaton. The shortlisted candidate will work 1:1 supporting a student with down syndrome. This position is full time, ongoing via the agency.

The school is in a large purpose-built building with 150 pupils on roll. Pupils are aged 4 - 11 years old, with EHCPs for learning difficulties, social and communication needs. Many of the students have ASD. As well as offering students an engaging curriculum, they also work hard to develop communication and social skills.

The school requires a skilled individual who has worked with children or young adults with a hearing impairment, ideally this would be within a school or college setting. You will be required to support exchange and communication within the classroom, while also providing academic and emotional support. You will also be required to support students on school trips and after school clubs.

In return the school can offer a forward thinking and stable working environment.

To apply for this role, you will need to have:

  • References available from a school or college setting
  • Makaton Training
  • A current DBS
  • Be able to commit to a long-term role full time

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. You will be required to apply for an Enhanced DBS if your current DBS is not on the update service.

Remedy Education is a committed Equal Opportunities Employer and therefore will not discriminate on the grounds of age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation.
