Job description

Our client Blackburn & Darwin council require a full time (5 days) social worker to join their CIC team, initially for 2 - 3 months to cover a vacancy.

The role will involve providing a comprehensive social work service to children looked after in Blackburn with Darwen, ensuring that all statutory obligations are fulfilled.

It will involve undertaking child and family assessments, in partnership with the child, their parents or carers and other agencies, ensuring that the child and the child's voice is central to the assessment, with appropriate consideration and analysis of risk.

The candidate must ideally have at least 2 or 3 years post qualification experience and worked in statutory front line social work services. Rate will be determined depending on experience

Good I.T. skills and experience in the use of Protocol LCS system are preferable. We provide a modern office environment with modern I.T. technology, including use of Skype and Microsoft Teams.

The candidate must have good, preferably continuous, references and be registered with Social Work England and be able to show evidence of professional development.

You must be a car driver and have access to a car and be insured for business purposes.

There is car parking available behind our office, which is based in a central town location.

Due to COVID-19, there remain some working from home arrangements, which will be explained in more detail at interview.

Purpose of the job

To effectively discharge Local Authority Statutory duties in relation to:

  • Children in need;
  • Children in need of protection;
  • Children looked after and subject to care proceedings;
  • Children in need of permanence plans.

Key Requirements

  • To commit to continued professional development, including participating in the development of others and engage fully in reflective supervision with your manager.
  • To take part in working groups, focus groups to contribute to plans to develop the quality of practice in the service.

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Social work in child care, including children subject to Child in need plans/child protection plans/child looked after plans and care proceedings.
  • Assessment and planning in statutory child care.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential:

  • Knowledge of current child care legislation and guidance
  • An understanding of child development, including attachment theory.
  • Knowledge of the assessment framework
  • Ability to:

Relate theory to practice

Assess and Evaluate

  • Communicate in writing to a high level (produce reports)
  • Communicate orally to a high level (present information clearly to service users/colleagues and other agencies

SKILLS / ABILITIES

Essential:

  • Ability to identify children in need and/or risk of abuse
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work across cultures
  • Ability to be able to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to manage a caseload and prioritise work
  • Ability to undertake child protection enquiries and determine the needs of and level of risk to children
  • Skills in communicating with parents, carers and children
  • Knowledge and understanding of Looked After Children's health and educational needs
  • An ability to involve service users and professionals in a planning and review process.
  • Ability to work flexibly in order to meet the demands of the job.
  • Access to/use of a vehicle is an essential requirement.
  • This post is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Due to the sensitive nature of the duties of the post holder will be expected to undertake a criminal record check as part of the recruitment process.

Desirable

  • Ability to speak Urdu, Punjabi or Gujerati

Essential requirements:
